ZAMOSC, POLAND Zamosc, known as the “Pearl of Renaissance”, - TopicsExpress

ZAMOSC, POLAND Zamosc, known as the “Pearl of Renaissance”, is a fortress established in 1580 surrounding a luxurious housing estate. The originator and, as we would call him today, the developer of this ideal city (citta ideale) was Jan Zamoyski (1542-1605), the Great Chancellor of the Polish Crown, one of the most affluent people in the history of the world. With a purchasing power of at least twice as much as the one of Bill Gates and an excellent educational background, he was able to make his dreams come true. One of the most popular Italian architects of the time, Bernardo Morando, was employed to draw the plans and supervise the construction works of Zamosc. Zamosc is the worlds only extant town with a fully Late Renaissance and Mannerist urban layout, recognised as an absolutely top-class monument of architecture. This unique town was an exotic multi-ethnic commercial centre with a population of Poles, Armenians, Jews, and Greeks, reflecting all the elements of a harmonious community: civic responsibility, education, cultural and religious diversity, and trade. Today, Zamosc is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
