ZATRIKION –THE GREEK CHESS When chess was spread in Byzantium over 1000 years ago it was named after the ancient Greek word ‘Zatrikion’ (meaning the ultimate victory) and it was played on a circular board . Zatrikion- circular chess was very popular at that time and for many centuries afterwards including mediaeval times,(hence sometimes it is called Greek mediaeval chess). Zatrikion was historically the first attempt of transforming the square board into a circular one and is known today world wide as . Its historical rules have been preserved but there is also a well known modern version that uses the ancient board and set up with the modern set of rules, (since the historical rules were not known at the time this idea came up). The idea however of using such a unique ancient chess game adopting the modern rules proved to be so successful that annual world championships are held for the last twenty years ,using this combination of Greek Zatrikion and FIDE rules. Another very exciting version, uses the circular board with both modern set up as well as modern rules, offering an amazing chess game experience . Zatrikion is essentially similar to regular chess and it is not really more difficult to play. Its circular though makes the game more challenging and imaginative. It is a thrilling game in its all three main versions, ancient and modern. The < split> board model (theatre), was designed so, as to be arranged according to different set ups.
