ZERO-G GEE GEE GENRE GEEK MELNIBOURNE CUP FORM GUIDE As y’all know I am of the expert opinion that everyone geeks out about something. Science Fiction, Fantasy, History, Cars, Fishing, Religion, Food, Vintage Klingon Bloodwine, Left Handed Tea Pot Collecting... you name it, there’s a passionate fanbase for it. (*Aww, bless*) Horseracing is no exception, though personally I cant quite manage to outrun the beasties. Phillip Mostyn, a Facebook fiend, noted that one of the Cup Horses sounded Lord Of The Ringish: Dunaden. (Its a French variant, nest-ce pas??) Indeedy do! In Tolkien’s ‘verse, the Dunedain (Dunedarn) were the Manly Men Of The West, descended from the Numenorean survivors of the sunken island kingdom who came by boat to Middle Earth where they settled in Arnor and Gondor. Just as well Middle Earth is New Zealand then. They’d have been ship out of luck if they’d come knocking on Australia’s welcoming shores. What a pity there’s no Shadowfax running this year! (Or Binky: a sure thing in a dead heat.) AnyHOOF, based on the well known scientific principle that non Gee Gee Geeks can pick winning nags based solely on their names, let’s have a reccy through the field. Green Moon - Well, that’s low hanging fruit! Lots of skiffy references to Green Moons. Pointedly ignoring Hulk or She-Hulk being disrespectful, we could obviously mould the moon-is-made-of-green-cheese thingy to our purpose. Although I wondered if there might be some connection with the iconic cow jumping over the moon and Luna’s cheesey nature it turns out that it was John Heywood who in 1546 coined the phrase “The moon is made of greene cheese”, with “Green” actually meaning “not aged” or fresh. He was likely having a laff, but that didn’t stop the intrepid Wallace & Grommit blasting off on a silly Selenic voyage to get some cheese for their crackers in A Grand Day Out. By the way, J.R.R Tolkien also wrote a little story consoling his son over the loss of a toy dog, in which said plush puppy flew to the moon. It was in 1925 and was called Roverandom, and it amusingly pups at the post later usage of the term Lunar Rover. There are, actually, so many Green Moons in the Science Fiction genre, everything from adventure games to Antonio Banderas indy film company, which has several genre films in the works, that you could safely go with it as your horse of choice. Red Cadeaux- Cadeaux translates from French as Gifts. I supposed you could make something of Joan of Arc having ‘red gifts’, now there’s a guest who would be welcome at the Game Of Thrones Red Wedding! There is a Canadian fantasy author named Sass Cadeaux. Brown Panther - There is actually a a light heavyweight South African boxer who fights under the name Brown Panther who is clearly riffing of the Marvel Comic character, The Black Panther, who was Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s 1966 groundbreaking African superhero. Foreteller - There are several fantasy connections for a word like that but I’d go with Ursula K. Le Guin’s classic 1969 science fiction novel, The Left Hand Of Darkness. There’s a religious character called Meshe, who was originally a Foreteller of the Handdara. It’s a rather mysticy wysticky thing. Dandino - A U.S comic book writer. Or possibly the first name of the saurian from The Flintstones. Ethiopia - A country in Africa. However, theres an Ethiopian American sci-fi trio named CopperWire that earlier this year produced the futuristic album Earthbound. The hip-hop space opera takes place in the year 2089 featuring three renegades from another world who hijack a spacecraft and ride it to Earth, and eventually land in Ethiopia. The Gods Must Be Crazy! Super Cool - Winter is coming. Chill! About covers that. Masked Marvel- The Masked Marvel (Adam Austin), is a fictional satirical superhero in the Marvel Comics universe, created by writer Karl Kesel. Austin first appeared in X-Men #187, where he debuted in The Masked Marvel - an additional mini-comic which appeared at the end of the issue. Hes a kind of fourth wall breaking character. (Annnndd were back to She-Hulk mooning!) Hawkspur - A villain from Doctor Who - The Dark Dimension. The lost 30th Anniversary story that was Tom Baker’s particular project. Rik Mayall, David Bowie, Brian Blessed or David Warner were tipped, seperately or all munged together, to play him! Simenon - Sam Simeon is a D.C character from Gorilla City, and is the grandson of Gorilla Grodd. So? Go ook it up! Dear Demi - You know this one! Demi Moore. From Parasite the 1982 Horror/Sci-FI. Squished the clay in Ghost.... Ruscello - Means: stream in another tongue. So...theres clearly a River Song clever reference to be made there. Sea Moon - Well, that’s Sea as in Ocean, but I would much rather go with the Letter C- as in C Moon, a 1972 reggae song by Paul and Linda McCartney, from their Wings days. The name C Moon was inspired by lyrics in the song Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. McCartney said, Theres a line in [Wooly Bully] that says, Lets not be L7. Well, L7, it was explained at the time, means a square—put L and 7 together and you get a square... So I thought of the idea of putting a C and a moon together (a half-moon) to get the opposite of a square. So C Moon means cool, in other words. Logical. In that special Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds way. Ill leave the others to yall as an exercise in geekery. Oh and, try not to Squeee!!! too much imaging Tom Hiddleston or Benny Batch is Thief Of Hearts (Voleuese De Coeurs). As far as Im concerned thats the noise robots make when Magnus Robot FIghter bashes them with his steel smashing strength!
