ZESCO GO TOP AFTER WIN OVER NKANA Zesco United went to the top of the MTN FAZ Super League standings after they defeated Nkana 3 – 1 in a thrilling week 13 match played at Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday. Winston Kalengo scored a brace and provided an assist for Kondwani Mtonga’s goal while Festus Mbewe scored Nkana’s only goal. Kalengo and Mbewe are now joint top goal scorers with 8 goals each. The result means Zesco United lead the standings with 30 points, one ahead of Nkana in second. The two sides played out a goalless first half but Nkana took the lead in the 46th minute when Mbewe rose highest to head from a throw-in from inside the box. Eight minutes later, Kalengo pulled the home side level as he turned in Kangwa Chileshe’s cross from the right flank. The move was started by Zimiseleni Moyo whose direct pass found an unmarked Chileshe who then squared into the area for Kalengo to finish from close range. Kalengo turned provider in the 75th minute, squaring the ball for Kondwani Mtonga and completed his brace with two minutes of the four added at the end of regulation time played. Zesco United coach Tenant Chembo told fazfootball in a post-match interview that his team’s cohesion was key to Saturday’s victory. “It was a tough game, we were a expecting it because Nkana have been on a good run until now. But the cohesion in my team is good and even when we were down I told my players to remain calm. It is a long way to the end of the season but collecting maximum points from a team like Nkana is an indication that we are fighting for the league championship,” said Chembo Chembo added that staying top of the standings would not be easy. “It is easy to go to the top but staying there is much more difficult. It all comes down to planning, we map out the way forward because we have another league game on Tuesday.” And Nkana coach Masautso Mwale attributed the defeat to loss of concentration concentration by his players. “My boys lost concentration after we took the lead. In a high profile match, when we took the lead we were supposed to hold our own but there were lapses in our midfield and defence. In the end we conceded weak goals and that is no supposed to happen with a team like Nkana,” said Mwale Mwale further said that his team would go back to the drawing board to reflect where they went wrong adding that his team would not under-rate any opponents as all matches are tough.
