ZOGAMonline: S. Chingnu | Kon Ngilh Zou Diam | 2013, Review Written by Benjamin D. Samte Published in feature News Thursday, 10 October 2013 09:54 Touted as the “comeback album” for veteran singer S. Chingnu, “Kon Ngilh Zou Diam” is a highly anticipated album, with many eagerly waiting to get their hands on a copy of it – young & old alike. For the younger generation, this album may well be an initiation into S. Chingnu’s music & singing, while for the older ones it will be yesterday once more with a modern twist. In the works since 2010, this effort has finally managed to see the light of day this year – and well worth the wait it seems to have been. The videos for the album have been shot in select locations at Delhi & Lamka. In most of the videos, scenes from both Delhi & Lamka have been incorporated to highlight the mood of the album, which is a merging together of the modern with the traditional, the old with the new. Talking about the actual videos for the songs on the album – it’s a case of nothing much to say. They are shot in a pretty linear fashion, taking no extra risks without trying to do anything fancy. Everything is done in a nonobtrusive manner such that the video doesn’t take the focus away from the music which is the main USP here. The overall feel one gets after listening to the album is that the producers have tried to retain the “folk” feel of the original songs, while at the same time stripping them clean to the bare minimum in terms of musical arrangements, but not to the extent of making it all sound sterile. The one thing that really becomes obvious is the “less-is-more” approach in this album, which is actually a welcome break from the many vast mediocre choices which one comes across today, which try to incorporate many things – but fail to deliver the goods. People who have heard the older renditions of these songs by S.Chingnu herself will certainly see or rather in this case “hear” the massive differences in the approach to the recording of the songs. This album keeps things neat, clean & tidy – no extra fuss, bells or whistles. All ten tracks are such that they are set for easy listening. No sudden highs or lows in the album with each track gently easing itself into the next. The audio quality is surprisingly excellent. It seems as if the folks at Roulngul’s Recording Studios/Gideon Recordings know their stuff in the mixing & mastering department - the levels of the vocals & instruments are spot on. But still there remains a small cause for complaint regarding the audio - the instrument tones are still not quite up to the mark, especially acoustic guitars. Also, a little less reverb & effects on the vocals perhaps next time? The all important audio recording of this album has been sponsored by Pu LT Ngaihte - now you all know who to thank for making this happen. The videography & editing has been done by Sam Guite, with additional help from Rinawm Tonsing. With the price only being Rs.150/- it’s a super deal for quality vocals & music. Go ahead & grab a copy.
