ZOOM IT TO..... 14/8/2013 OPEN LETTER TO SOCCER FANS: Dear Ladies and gentlemen, I know that the last two months have been boring due to the fact that most top world football leagues have been off season but thank God, the new season is starting up this month. It wasn’t easy having no match to watch on the different weekend so kudos for being patient. There is no doubt that Football is one of the games that cuts across all generations, tribes, gender etc. It is one of the most watched games in the world and unites people, countries, continents and the world at large. It is amazing how there are only twenty (22) players on every standard football pitch but there are thousands if not millions outside there watching and supporting. Thus soccer and sports in general is very crucial and part of life. Unfortunately, the last season saw the retirement of some key football influential people in the world. The first one was Sir Alex Ferguson who managed Manchester United football club in England for twenty seven (27) years and directed the team to win trophies year in year out. There is no doubt that he was, is and will always be a great coach of all times. Then David Beckham, the former captain of England also threw in a towel after a successful Career. He played in the top teams of the world and just like his former manager, Alex, he will never be forgotten. There are other players that also retired but in the interest of time, allow me to stop there. Usually when people retire, things change in their teams either for the best or the worst. Let us all be optimistic and wish the teams the very best. But as it is believed, SPECTATORS are the best footballers. So as some teams are going through change, it is also in order for you dear footballers (spectators) to also change in the new season. Therefore allow me to point out some of the things that deserve modification: First of all, football is a game that promotes unity amongst all players. That is why they must first shake hands before and after competing. It is also a game that promotes care for each other regardless of the side one is playing for. That is the reason why the game has to stop if any player is hurt. Then football players lift each other up if anyone falls. However when it comes to the fans, they do the opposite. Some Football funs supporting different sides look at each other as enemies. In Rukiga we say; NYINA WOMWANA TASHASHIRE, ISHENKAZI NGU NDEHANIKA interpreted that if the mother of a child is not in pain, why should the auntie hang herself just to prove that she is more hurt? Honestly if the players respect the results of the game, why should the fans feel more pain? In any competition, there is always a winner and a “winwa” sorry looser. How I pray that all of you fans will learn to celebrate victory but also accept defeat. Remember not all days are Sundays. Today you win, the other day you loose. That`s life mwatu! Then Bakiga also believe that EBYOMWIRISIZO TIBITAHAGA meaning that whatever happens in the grazing field should never be known at home. Some Football fans are too emotional and usually shift the results of the matches they watch to other areas in life which is very wrong. Football is just a game and should never rule your lives. Whether your favourite team wins or loses, let it stop in the field. When you get back home or to work so excited or down is very stressful to the people you find there. Don’t mix football at home and if we are to borrow the slogan of wrestling, please don’t try it at HOME. Lastly, although you love football that much, let it not be an inconvenience to others. For your information, stories of football are not enjoyed by everyone. May you learn to always talk about your favourite sport with the right people at the right time while doing the right thing. Then just because you love football shouldn’t mean that everything on your T.V should be soccer. Your children and other people around also have a right to the T.V so stop dictating over the remote control. Then once you are celebrating any victory, always do it as gentlemen. For goodness` sake, a goal is just a goal. Why should you scream your lungs out over a rubber ball that enters a net? A hand clap is enough to show that you are happy. Can`t you copy pool players who just bang twice on the table? Then, never allow the game to get in between your families. Honestly, why should you leave your husband or wife in a cold bed just to watch a match at mid night? Does it really make sense? Love football but don’t be obsessed with it. Watch it when you are free but when you have other obligations to fulfill, don’t let it rule your life. Otherwise, I believe that the upcoming season will be the best since there is new blood and transfer of players among the differently teams. May the best teams win! Yours faithfully, RUTANYARAHANSI.
