Zambian Couples Living Apart Due to Work ‘It is Breaking Family - TopicsExpress

Zambian Couples Living Apart Due to Work ‘It is Breaking Family & Marriages Apart’ By Godfrey Katongo It has been noticed that there has been an increase in numbers of men and women working in different parts of the country as singles. As we may be aware, Zambia is a Christian nation by declaration which should live by the principles of Scripture, tradition and reason. Inasmuch as we appreciate the PF government and its leadership, there is need for it to seriously attend to this issue. I would like to find out the government position in consolidating marriages for its employees and those working in private sector but living apart. I am deeply concerned about tormented men and women detatched from their spouses especially those in the education sector, where you find a husband is in Mwinilunga and the wife in Chilubi Island. I believe, among other duties, it is the responsibility of the government and faith-based organisations to effectively promote peace, reconciliation as well as strenghthening relationships among families and couples. It is suprising that even the clergy are victims of such a vice and yet, are a conduit to national peace and tranquility. If their spiritual contribution cannot be appreciated now, it would be wrong to need them when it is too late. We can’t undermine the fact that ‘Families are nation’ and are electorate of the day. As we campaign against vices of corruption, cervical cancer, HIV/AIDS, early marriages and so on, let us also take on board the aspect of building marriages that are locally living far apart due to the nature of work. My appeal to the government teacher unions, NGOs and other stakeholders is that, together, revisit the policy condition, that seeks to separate couples from their spouses by means of holding on to transfers especially provincial ones and come up with something that would help coulpes enjoy life together.
