Zambians Pour into Streets to Celebrate Edgar Lungus Victory Zambians poured out enmasse to celebrate Patriotic Front leader Edgar Lungu’s victory as the country’s sixth Republican President following a slender victory over opposition United Party of National Development candidate Hakainde Hichilema. Lungu was announced winner shortly after 22:00 hours by Electoral Commission of Zambia chairperson Irene Mambilima and immediatedly declared winner by acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda at Mulungushi International Conference in Lusaka. Lungu’s supporters burst into celebrations country wide except in areas such as Southern Province where Hichilema received over 80% endorsement from his ethnic grouping. There was jubilation in Lusaka, Kitwe, Chipata, Kasama, Solwezi, Mongu, Kabwe and Ndola among other areas as the long wait was over. The former Chawama parliamentarian is due to be sworn in at Heroes Stadium this morning. Meanwhile, Acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda, who is the presidential election returning officer, declared last evening that Lungu as duly elected president after he amassed 807, 925 votes against his closet rival UPND President Hakainde Hichilema who polled 780, 168 votes. Lungu has been leading in the presidential race from the first day election results started trickling in. He takes over from late Republican President Michael Sata who died in office in October last year in a London hospital Other candidates in the race were FDD’s Leader Edith Nawakwi who got 15, 321 votes, followed by MMD president Nevers Mumba who polled 14, 609, UNIP President Tilyenji Kaunda who got 9, 737, Erick Chanda of Fourth Revolution 8, 054, Elias Chipimo of NAREP 6, 002. Others are Miyanda Geoffrey of Heritage got 5, 757, Daniel Pule of CDP got 3, 293 votes, Sondashi Ludwig of FDA 2, 073 and Peter Sinkamba of Green Party got 1, 410 votes. zambiareports/2015/01/25/zambians-pour-streets-celebrate-edgar-lungu-victory/
