Zane Grey loved wild mustangs. These three books are examples of this love. In his history of Buffalo Jones, The Last of the Plainsmen, he tells of a real life effort to capture the White Mustang. Wild Horse Mesa introduced the magnificent mustang Panguitch just as Wildfire told the exciting story of the wild horse Wildfire. All of these books were inspired by Zanes adventures with Eugene Stewart as they pursued the White Mustang in Snake Gulch, Arizona near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in 1907. According to local families, the wild mustangs on the Kaibab Plateau near the Grand Canyon were either shot by ranchers who saw them as a nuisance or killed by the federal government more than 50 years ago.
