Zappa speaking the lamentable truth. Especially from 14:59 on to the end. Back in the day, a bands recording was an attempt to capture the bands live sound. It usually didnt quite succeed, but was good enough. Then you went to see the band live and were blown away; not because they sounded just like the record, but because live was special, it was something different and often magical. It had a life all its own. Nowadays its the exact opposite. Bands will stop at nothing to sound like the CD, including depending heavily on using pre-recorded parts to beef up (or in some cases its the whole sound) what comes out of the speakers. As a result, live music, in large part, is now just a homogenized pantomime with no magic. Sure, stage shows are bangin. But the real magic of music, by and large, doesnt often happen anymore. As a result, what people used to seek in live music has now been replaced with what I believe to be routine, lame bullshit. Remember when, for the most part, if you went to a live music venue it wasnt very often you saw a truly crappy band? Sure, they might not have been your cup of tea, but what they were doing, they were damn good at. That was because to get gigs, you had to be good. Some songs might not have been played perfect, with all the instrumentation that was in the studio version. It was the bands own interpretation of the song and it was usually awesome! Nowadays, it doesnt matter. People get up there and fake it with pre-recorded tracks, the audience has no idea theyre being faked. They sit there watching someone they believe is truly talented when in reality theyre applauding a Play button. Sometimes bands use tracks as an enhancement and thats often very cool! But when they use tracks to cover up their deficiencies, sorry to offend but thats just lame and, worse, its flat out lying to the audience. Whats worse is nowadays its become so commonplace that people expect it and, when confronted about it will defend said artist by saying its not really all that much about them actually singing, or playing the parts live. Its about their performance. Sorry but I thought music performance meant...well....I thought it meant actually performing music... And people wonder why the music industry has tanked....
