Zec to get US$95m for polls PDF Print E-mail The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is set to receive an additional US$95 million from Treasury this week as preparations for the July 31 harmonised elections gather momentum, the commission’s chairperson Justice Rita Makarau has disclosed. The money will bring to US$130 million the money Zec would have received from Government. Speaking during Star FM programme The Hub last week, Justice Makarau said the money was enough to cover all the costs that Zec will incur before, during and after the poll. “We are receiving funding from Treasury,” she said. “We are receiving steady disbursements. It may not all be coming in one tranche as we would have liked to see it in our bank account but it is coming upon request and that is making it a whole lot easier for us to manage. “We are in the process of procuring the material that we will need to put up the 9 000 plus polling stations. We are also recruiting the men and women that will man those polling stations and yes we are ready to hold elections. “The next tranche should be coming immediately after special voting and we are hoping next week Tuesday Treasury would be releasing further funding to enable us to now prepare for the actual conduct of the poll on July 31. “We are hoping to receive the remaining US$95 million. To date we have received US$38 million out of a budget of about US$133 million. “So, we are hoping that the US$95 million that is remaining will be released to us next week. “It will cover the budget that we had submitted. “We may have budget overruns and additional things that we didn’t think of when we did the budget that we may need to fund. But that will all go into our financial statement at the end of the exercise. “But we believe that if we get US$95 million we should be able to run the elections by July. 31” Zec received US$25 million for voter registration before getting an additional US$2,5 million for the sitting of the Nomination Court and finally a US$11 million disbursement for the special voting exercise. Meanwhile, Justice Makarau told ZBC News yesterday that logistics for the special voting was still being carried to the various centres around the country today and tomorrow. She said the voting process will be carried out in two days and advised prospective voters to attend to district centres to the places where they are stationed where the voting will take place. “Most of the material is already in place at the various polling stations that were set up,” she said. “Voting will be over two days and we don’t expect everyone to come on the same day so there will be no issue of congestion.” Sunday Mail
