Zimstat is claiming a fictional 11% unemployment in Zimbabwe. They tell us most Zimbos living in Zim work in the informal sector. The reasonable man or woman then asks - if the people are working then why do they depend on Diaspora remmittances for a living? If you ask any 23yr old woman what she does, she says buying and selling. The truth is that she is jobless. We say buying and selling just to save face. She sits at home for 25 days in a month and then the other 5 days she might sell second hand clothes or Tupperware lunchboxes or Forever Living products to her friends. Buying and selling may mean $70 revenue a month. She lives in parents house, eating their food and using their eldctricity to blowdry her hair. If they asked her to pay rent, shell have nothing left. Shes a businesswoman is she not? Thats what Zimstat say. But hers is an insolvent business. If it had actual business premises and machinery and workforce, it would have been liquidated and torn apart by creditors. Zimbos at home live off the remittances sent from Diaspora. Its almost like being on Britains Unemployment Benefit system, after which the reggae group UB40 is named. The long queues at Western Union/Moneygram tell the story that Zimstat (on behalf of Bob) are trying to conceal. At bottle stores, youths holler biggers ndiitirewoka one (big man, buy me a beer). They sit there as early as 10am. In a country where supposedly the unemployment rate is a respectable 11%. In the 80s-90s cops on horseback used to arrest public drinkers. But now the cops dont bother. Shoot, if the entire country is sitting under a tree, with a cold Black Label between its thighs, youll need a whole lot of horses to chase everyone.
