Zion Canyon Rotary Club, a small but growing satellite organization of the Hurricane Valley Rotary Club, completed another successful Giving Tree project during the recent holiday season on behalf of 18 low-income families in and around the communities of Springdale and Hurricane. With the help of local residents from the Zion Canyon Senior Center who decorated ornaments for a community Christmas tree and wrapped hundreds of packages, the 13 members of Zion Canyon Rotary, with help from the Hurricane Valley Rotary Club, collected generous gifts of clothing, food and toys from a variety of sources, including local business people and other individuals, for distribution to 58 children who feared Santa Claus would pass them by this year. “My own teenagers helped distribute the gifts and, in the process, learned some valuable lessons about giving, generosity and compassion for those in need,” said April Gates, the local Rotarian who organized the event. “This project helped all of us better understand what the spirit of Christmas is truly about.” Interested individuals or Rotarians visiting the national park are invited to attend Zion Canyon Rotary Club any Thursday at 1 p.m. at Jack’s Grille.
