Zionism and emergence of the state of Israel Every few years, we witness the scale of Israeli- Palestinian conflict. It was not always like this. Once this region was peaceful and was known as Palestine only. It was not until 1948 that the state of Israel came into being. It was created through the ideology of Zionism . The person who is considered to be the father of modern political Zionism is a Hungarian journalist named Theodor Herzl. He formed the World Zionist Organization in the late 1800s to promote migration of the Jewish people into Palestine in hopes of forming a Jewish state. Later Chaim Wiseman, a British chemist motivated in the ideology of Zionism convinced the then British Foreign secretary Arthur Balfour in making the famous Balfour Declaration in 1917, which promised a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The British did so to gain the support of the Jews against the Ottoman Empire in the 1st World War. In accordance with the Balfour Declaration the British allowed massive migration of the Jews to Palestine after the war had ended. After the 2nd World War, the whole world became sympathetic to the Jewish people for the holocaust(jenocide of the Jews in the 2nd world war) by the Nazis and supported the creation of a Jewish state. Subsequently, on 14 May 1948, David Ben Gurion declared the independence of the state of Israel. He named himself as the 1st prime minister of Israel and Chaim Wiseman became the 1st president. -Sadman
