Zlata-Kale is an archaeological site in modern Southern Serbia, - TopicsExpress

Zlata-Kale is an archaeological site in modern Southern Serbia, between the towns of Prokuplje and Leskovac, that is believed to be the homeland of emperor Iustinian by many. Known since the 19th century and visited by famous scholars like Arthur Evans, it was only in 2013 when the first archaeological excavations have been undertaken, with four small trenches so far. Parts of the city wall, a gate and a building have been uncovered. The remains of the Early Byzantine dam have been measured - the ancient town had an artificial lake on his Southern side. The small findings belong to the 6th century (ceramics, glass, metal) and to the Medieval period, ca. 9-11th century (ceramics). The remains of the church on the top of the plateau with a mosaic floor have not been excavated yet, since the goal of the project, supported by the Ministry of Culture of Serbia, is to gather only basic information about this almost unique site. Regarding the dimensions, the building technique, the indications for crossing of a cardo and decumanus, and the huge dam remains, it is obvious that this town, built in the 6th century, would not been erected without an imperial permission. The only goal of this page under construction is to promote Zlata-Kale and to help the research of a site that has attracted the interest of so many scholars, but was never excavated until now. By my belief, Zlata is of importance for a long lasting discussion in Byzantinst circles: the ubication of Iustiniana Prima and other settlements mentioned by Procopius. Even now, the funding is low and the four trenches are by far not enough for a basic insight. Prof. Dr. Mihailo Milinkovic Director of excavations
