Zoning promotes mediocrity, ethnicity, says guber aspirant A two - time governorship candidate under the platforms of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) and the Progressive Peoples Alliance ( PPA ) in Akwa Ibom State, Larry Esin, has criticised zoning arrangement for governorship seat, maintaining that the system will further polarise the state. Apart from the ethnic division that the system generates, Esin said it also encourages mediocrity, as governorship aspirants are only restricted to certain ethnic group or senatorial districts . Esin , a PDP governorship aspirant and indigene of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District , where the 2015 governorship position is being zoned to , made this accession in Oron on Monday in an interview with our correspondent. He frowned that in the last seven years, ethnicity has eaten so deep into the fabrics of the state and maintained that it will be the responsibility of the next administration to reconcile the various ethnic groups in Akwa Ibom . “ Zoning perpetuates ethnic division. Today , an Annang man becomes governor and he believes he was elected governor because he is from Annang and he pays attention to developing that area of the state and the people. “ Similarly , if an Oron man , who believes in ethnic politics , also comes up , he will also put all his efforts in developing Oron ethnic nationality . This concept will be atop of any new governor ’s agenda . “ At the end of the day , there is going to be disparities in the level of development across the state. This is why initially I said I am not in support of zoning as an individual. “ But as it is, I will follow the policy of my party . Believe me , zoning has only a short - term benefit for any society. After some of us have served as governor , I am sure the race will be open for everybody . “ The damage zoning will have caused as a result of imbalances in the distribution of infrastructure is going to be immense . It is worthy of note that a particular governor may not perform well because he does not have the support of the state House of Assembly . ”
