_I_ choose the rules I live by, it just so happens that a lot of them match up with the law of the land. If I dont believe a law to fit _my_ moral code, then I have no compunction in breaking it as long as it does not harm others. That is my judgement to make, and only _I_ am qualified to make it. I am not qualified to impose a moral code on anyone, and neither is any government. The Law is The Law, we continue to confuse it with an individually maintained moral code, when it cannot be. They are rules for controlling us, because a lot of us are not mature enough to control ourselves. Yes, The Law is necessary for a functioning society, but their touch should be light, and they should not be used to micro-manage each and every person. The Law should teach us to control ourselves, and emphasise that only _we_ are responsible for our decisions and actions. Harsh and oppressive laws prevent us from learning self-control by taking the responsibility for our words and actions away from us (I was only following orders, I was only doing what The Law told me to, It isnt illegal so it must be OK) and imposing disproportionate consequences which lead us to obey out of fear rather than the sure knowledge that we _know_ its the right thing to do. Until each person is allowed to develop and internalise a simple and general moral code (Live your life without harming others and allow others to do the same), we will be puppets of governments and institutions that use the law to manipulate us and control us through our fear.
