___ + 5 = 13. What is the only correct answer? I just talked to a mother who has a child in 2nd grade who had this question on her homework assignment and she put 8 which is the correct answer but the teacher marked it wrong. You are probably thinking the same thing I did...but thats the right answer. The teacher marked it wrong because with this new Common Core Curriculum, this little girl was supposed to draw a box and shade in 8 squares instead of just giving the number 8. There was nothing in the directions saying she had to do this, but just because she didnt draw this stupid box of 8 squares and shade them she got the question marked wrong. A lady in the next office who is an engineer overheard us and came in and said she hates the Common Core and that as an engineer she does not think like that and it is useless for her. When kids gets to college are they still going to have to draw out boxes and shade them in?? When I was in school I learned that 8 + 5 = 13 and that is the ONLY right answer! Drawing boxes and shading them in is total stupidity and is only one of the many problems associated with the Common Core Curriculum. Its really all about government controlled education from a federal level instead of a state level! God help us!
