_______BNP hails Hasina’s statement________ The BNP last night appreciated the prime minister’s announcement that October 25 would be the last working day of the present parliament.The standing committee of the party at a meeting also decided to take the upcoming elections in four city corporations with all seriousness and send a high-level team to each of the city corporations to back the opposition-supported mayor aspirants, sources said. The meeting of the BNP’s highest policymaking body was presided over by Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office.“Our strategy regarding the anti-government movement will depend on the outcome of the city corporation elections. Polls results of the (BNP-led 18-party) opposition alliance-backed mayor aspirants will determine the nature of our fresh movement,” a BNP standing committee member told this correspondent after the meeting.There was no briefing for the media.The 18-party leaders will discuss the issues tomorrow [Monday] at a meeting at the same venue, sources said.The standing committee decided to declare the month of Ramadan as “organising month,” committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman told this correspondent. The opposition alliance will not enforce hartal or blockade before June 15 for uninterrupted campaign of their candidates in the city corporations.At a meeting of the AL Parliamentary Party on June 6, Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina said that October 25 would be the last working day of the ninth parliament and the next general election would be held by January 25 under an interim government formed with elected representatives.
