Whenever Em makes her clam chowder, it gets me to remembering—the blazing-white-grey sand that surrounded our small peninsula, the elephant sod where the green crabs tried to hide from the reach of hungry beach-boys. The razor grass and the way the mussels clung in clingy-black-clumps to the jetty rocks. Most of all though, when the tide went out and the black-grey dunes lay before us with their small warm water pools filled with minnow and shiners and under our very feet, beyond sight, living their own happy quiet lives, hid the steamers, razor clams and the cherry stones. All we needed was an old maxil’s house coffee can and a potato spirited from mom’s pantry and the everyday-summer-feast was on. Saturday Soup: Ems New England Clam Chowder A bushel of clams, a small harvest of potato, onion and celery--thickened in Ems way (dont try to stand up your spoon in this chowder) -- it is just right and just plain delicious. 9.95 Hope to see you all soon and remember always trust your cape.
