a bit late uploading these as i was in New Romney yesterday. but as Mrs scrumping did her thing it gave me an hours wander time around the lovely little village. first stop was the churchyard that i spotted in the distance. hosting its very own apple tree. the apples were brown to red and medium sweet. i had no intention of bagging any but i sneaked one for eating. also a few shrooms 2 i couldn’t ID and im pretty sure probably inedible. there was a bunch of shrooms however growing off an old tree stump. initially i thought i had stumbled on some wild oyster mushrooms as they kinda looked similar all be it bigger. deferring to knowledge greater than mine though it seems what i might have bagged is a fungus called dryads saddle. although edible in its younger form there are 2 reasons why these will most likely go in the bin. first is they were a but tough and leathery to touch. the second more important reason didnt occur to me until i got back home. any shroom that grows on or around yew should be avoided as yew is quite the toxic tree and passes its toxins on to any shroom growing on or near it. church yards and yews go hand in hand and theres also no way i could identify a stump. so to air on the side of caution in the bin they go. my main reason for going walkabout though was for what we spotted in a field full of sheep on the bus coming into the village. and although caught myself on barbed wire more than once it was worth it for the 3 giant puffballs i bagged. the field was scatted with them ranging from the size of a tennis ball right up to football size. i would have felt greedy taking the biggest so settles for 3 watermelon sized shrooms. Having already fried half of one up i can say they have the appearance of chicken with the texture of scrambled eggs and with a mild and pleasant mushroom taste. although not quite as flavoursome as the parasols i bagged earlier last week. they are a welcome addition to my wild food experiences and deffo worth keeping an eye out for. other pics of note. one small agaric found on new romney village green and another unidentified shroom that although looked rather agaricy was left due to yellow staining and a not to pleasant scent. oh and a pic of something im hoping (but not betting on) is a checkers fruit. the checkers is quite rare though so a bit of ID is due as its rare though im not disclosing even if i did ID correctly as :P
