a bit of an HK music scene rant, perhaps, but Id love to hear some opinions. (tonight is just an example - and actually not the best given the genres being represented - but i could rewrite this just about every weekend with different events) heres this Friday night in Hong Kong after a quick events skim, and of course im not the coolest kid on the block so i dont even get invited to everything: XXX has Future Dancehall clean has a show at Hong Kong Fringe Club 藝穗會 Fresh Off The Boat Asia presents Gigamesh Yeodie at Volar plus plenty of usual club antics and im sure im missing a show or two as well, plus of course the Secret Island Party blows up tomorrow and Saturday night is then another busy day of music and events... its not that theres nothing to do in HK, its that theres the exact opposite. so many events are going on simultaneously, which constantly divides the crowd.(though, when i see whos attending i see the same names for most events ;-) ) the underground scene seems to killing itself by avoiding unity at all costs. why dont we have massive events here? because of a lack of collaboration. just as an example, why has Heavy Hongkong x Magnetic Soul x Strategic Sounds x Frequency never happened for a drum n bass show? or Heavy x PARAGON x The Groove Thief (yes, thats me) x 狻猊 | Sensi Lion for reggae? or M4H x Canto Crews x Yeodie x _____ for hiphop (this is the closest one to happening in reality)? - part of this is a lack of viable venues, I know, but often it seems theres some sort of drama related to $, a past performance, an interpreted slight, etc. THATS CHILDISH. none of us are as cool as our public personas might seem, and if you disagree with that fact then maybe thats why theres a lack of collaboration! - it would be naive to think were all into music (promotion/performance) without some sense of ego-driven artistic self-expression, but it seems theres both the need for everyone to create their own brand combined with a general weariness within the scene which results in yet another show thats under-attended and not furthering THE MUSIC, which is what this is all supposed to be about, right? the venues get to dictate virtually everything here in HK because inevitably the nights are slightly underwhelming and everyone (except the local DJs...) must get paid. theres power in numbers - large local events benefit everyone involved. venue, crowd, DJs, promoters = win. #HK4DW right?
