a couple Robin Williams stories…in 85 or 86, at REI Berkeley, at the front desk we had a gooseneck microphone for paging calls…Robin grabbed that microphone and started in…Donner…Donner Party of ten…dinner is ready! and he wouldve done a full set if he hadnt been stopped. Many years later, 2005…Ruth and I are in NYC a few days before Alice was to graduate from NYU, and were walking down 7th Ave with Alice after lunch…Alice says, Theres Robin Williams, pointing to a guy probably two blocks away, well out of my eyesight, and I said, No way…you cant see that far…his back was to us, there was no way she could be sure it was Robin. So…I start walking really fast…and in a couple of minutes I catch up at a red light. And damned if it wasnt…so I say Hi…Im from Berkeley, just wanted to say hello and he says What are you doing in town?. My daughter is graduating from NYU and Robin replies, Wow, so is my son! So we talk kids and their studies, and when he mentions his sons work with video game development, all of a sudden, like a switch was turned on, he rolls into a very rapid comedy-sketch speech, as if he was doing a bit…after about 45 seconds of shtick, he stops, as if aware of impulse control, and sheepishly says yea, see ya at graduation… and walks off. We will all miss Robin Williams, rest in peace…RobBo
