a dads daily devotional July 3, 2014 It can happen again… One of the best known stories in the Bible is the one about the handwriting on the wall from Daniel 5. The bottom line was that King Belshazzar was arrogant and mocked God by his actions, so the Lord brought swift judgment on him. Our modern minds seem to think that was an interesting story, but does not have any application for us today. We may even use the reasoning that God worked that way in the Old Testament, but we are under the New Covenant today. Maybe that’s what Ananias and Sapphira thought (see Acts 5 in the New Testament). Their actions gave the local funeral home some unexpected business. The point of this devo is very blunt – God is still God and He could do something like this again. Actually He probably has, we just did not recognize it. Yes, THANKFULLY, God is a God is grace, love and much patience. But, God will not be mocked and hates our arrogance and pride. So, individuals and national leaders, we must humble ourselves before the Lord. Ask Him to remove all pride and self-sufficiency from our lives. We must conform our lives and policies to His word. If we are not willing to do that, then do not be surprised at the outcome. Lord, have mercy on us. Here is part of the passage from Daniel. Daniel 5:22-30 Yet you, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, even though you knew all this, (23) but you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines have been drinking wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which do not see, hear or understand. But the God in whose hand are your life-breath and your ways, you have not glorified. (24) Then the hand was sent from Him and this inscription was written out. (25) Now this is the inscription that was written out: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. (26) This is the interpretation of the message: MENE -- God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it. (27) TEKEL -- you have been weighed on the scales and found deficient. (28) PERES -- your kingdom has been divided and given over to the Medes and Persians. (29) Then Belshazzar gave orders, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a necklace of gold around his neck, and issued a proclamation concerning him that he now had authority as the third ruler in the kingdom. (30) That same night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain. Love, Dad (Brother Tom)
