a decent short intro to sentiment theory - more-or-less the default view of the late XVIII, even outside Britain, but until recently the concern mainly of intellectual historians (though I think empathy theory is a fairly clear descendent - even to the roots in aesthetics - though its position as a species of imagination is rarely emphasized). The relation of imagination (not always identified as such) to ethics is pretty complex and by no means obvious, but it has been pretty much taken for granted, mostly uncritically (a perfectly useful characterization of common sense in current usage), in the main Anglo-American traditions of the past couple centuries. I tend to think Austen understood the problematic aspects of Smith better than Smith did.
