a great review! 5.0 out of 5 stars Buckle up, and enjoy the ride! May 31, 2013 By espritbonne Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase Phoef Sutton has been a writer on several television series to which my husband and I became addicted over the years (Cheers, Boston Legal, Terriers...) so when we saw hed written this book we trusted our gut feeling it would be a good investment of a few bucks. Great call. Suttons keen craft for weaving a story (so wonderfully, were easily locked in solid within the first few moments) and his terrific gift of humor were as powerful here as theyve always been in his screenplays. No surprise there. What did surprise and delight us was just HOW specifically and vividly his words can detail a scene in a narrative. Its as if he brings his own screen along with him into the world of The Novel. Just as a perfectly detailed painting might appear to be a photograph, 15 Minutes To Live so distinctly captures and conveys its scenes via Suttons three-dimensional storytelling, I often felt as if I were absorbing this story as I would a play, if seated on stage, or a film, if present on set among the actors. What a treat to open the book and immediately be caught up in the deliciously descriptive minutiae of the first few lines, feeling and tasting the water that pulled at her and pushed her away...dragged her down with its cold heaviness...forced its way into her mouth...She should never be here, watching the stars bend and wrinkle behind the freezing weight of the salt water... The stars. Behind the salt water above me, theyre bending and wrinkling. I see them. Goosebumps. A few lines later Im softly mesmerized by the enchanting implication of the moon-cast shadow of a eucalyptus tree splashing across the hood of Carls car as he sits in his driveway, reflecting on his life in this house. But mere moments later Im laughing - no, Im guffawing - at the 20-20 caliber vision Suttons words allow my minds eye for observing Carls encounter with two animals hes feeding. As deeply as I savor the guffaws, I savor the glimpse into Carls soul I am given by his reaction to these encounters, setting me up for what lies ahead. And in this book, thats similar to savoring a moment to tighten your grip on the safety bar of your roller coaster. Because you have no idea what lies ahead, amid the twists, turns, ups and downs. Shivers. The relationships here are a fascinating study. The vulnerability of my own relationship with each character was equally interesting. But the strength of the love story woven throughout this wild ride is what thrilled me the most. And the concept of loving someone enough to embrace the potential challenges of a Groundhog Day life. Only, not even a full Groundhog Day. Just a Groundhog 15 Minutes. Is there really a caliber of love strong enough for a loop that short? Heart Flutters. Comment |
