a post from The Speech Therapy Centre Aphasia is a condition where comprehension, expressive language, reading and/or writing can be affected. Aphasia results from an injury or damage to the brain, specifically to the language centres in the brain. Aphasia can result from a stroke or traumatic brain injury. The language centre of the brain is the area associated with language. This includes two main areas called the ‘Brocas area’ and the ‘Wernickes area’ The language centres can be usually found in the left hemisphere of the brain. Any communication challenges vary and are generally linked to the site and extent of the damage. The Brocas area is associated with speech production and articulation. The Wernickes area is associated with comprehension, it is linked to how we process language – spoken and written. These two areas are joined together by a bundle of fibres. The areas work together to enable us to understand and produce language.
