a recent letter to a shelter that was inquiring about our program at S.o.t.N. Kennels -- Hi Xxxxxx - we also use the power of the pack in our rehab program, in what I think is a rather unique way - our philosophy is to give a dog what it needs so it can give you what you want - 1st step is structured exercise - this is done with a group of dogs hooked to what we call our therapy trailer - using a quad to pull the trailer, we take the dogs on a 2 - 5 mile run at a medium trot - this is a structured run, so the dogs have to concentrate on what they are doing ( a job ) - its also a lot of fun for them and allows them to run off their frustrations, and importantly, raises serotonin levels, which helps us in step #2, setting boundaries - we start this by doing a few minutes of leash work ( heel, sit, stay ) - with serotonin levels high, they tend to catch on quickly - with serotonin levels still high, step #3, socialization, which includes exposing the dog to its problem(s) - after the session, which usually takes an hour or hour and a half, step #4, love and affection for a job well done - the program has been very successful - the dogs are keen and show their excitement when they realize a session is about to begin - Ill include a short video done by Shaw Cable for one of their programs - all of the dogs shown in the video were here for dog and/or human aggression issues, with the exception of the black and white pittie Dax who was here because of separation anxiety - the big black lab shown during a supervised introduction, and in other scenes was the most vicious dog Ive ever come across, to humans, dogs, horses, and any thing that moved - now Ebony is one of my key therapy dogs helping other dogs with the problems he once had - all of our helpers volunteer their time - when the dog is ready, with the shelters permission, we can help in trying to find a home for the dog - Al https://youtube/watch?v=6a1yudPf37Y&list=UUr0Nhp8T96ydA8aYAnyeopw
