a serious study I am reading on immigration says that guestworker/gastarbeiter migration schemes in continental Europe “generated little populist opposition based on ethnic or cultural change” and that “it is remarkable how guestworker recruitment was viewed as an essentially technocratic administrative issue”. The study contrasts this with the immediate opposition to colored immigration in post-war Britain. Is it true about the reaction to guestworkers. I found this unconvincing.
