administrators update 1. GaNala The community of GaNala requested a meeting this afternoon. A negotiator from the provincial department of Cooperative Governance, three councillors, the director public safety, Unit Manager for Kriel and myself attended this meeting. However, it was fruitless and no real discussions were possible. Judging on the outcomes of the meeting yesterday between community groups and the mines and this one today, the power of the sword is at this stage is overshadowing that of the word. To illustrate this a councillors house was petrol bombed after the meeting, and the other councillors had to be extracted for their safety. In Rietspruit another councillor received a death thread Lawlessness is reigning at this stage. Earlier today one of our traffic vehicles were burned. A report on this matter will be presented to the MEC tomorrow. I have noted the issues raised which fall within the mandate of the municipality. At this stage the municipality can not do much but await the situation to be normalised through police intervention. The SAPS has deployed its senior officers to the area and will be managing the situation. The photos below show the burned out car as well as the community committee shortly before the meeting was aborted. 2. N4: we have received reports that another protest is planned to close the N4 by community members in the KwaGuqa area. This may happen overnight. People are requested to be careful. If you get to a situation with a crowd next to the road, rather turn back. Do not attempt to run through, this is very dangerous.
