advice on ticks. ticks will make your dogs and yourself sick sooner or later. they are dangerous and should not be taken lightly. to prevent and kill off ticks use ivomec (merial brand, the original, as cheaper thai brands do not work). ivomec comes in 100ml or 200 ml bottle, you can buy from petshops or order online. you give 1ml per 15 kg bodyweight of dog. you can give orally or inject under skin. orally works the same as injection and is less stressful for some dogs and also there is risk of skin infection from injecting. just make sure your dog would not vomit after intake, which is very rare anyway. give with a bit of soft food or such, squirt ivomec with syringe directly in dogs mouth, close mouth gently and massage to make sure dog swallows. in about 12 hrs all tick on dogs body will be dead and future sucking tick will die just after start sucking. this is effective for about 2 weeks in the dogs body, then have to be applied again. ivomec original brand is safe for dogs and has no side effect, can be used long term if necessary. a slight overdose is not dangerous, a double dose would cause clumsiness and sight impair which wears off in 24 hrs. ivomec is also used in mange treatment and kills some kind of intestinal worm and also heartworm. your dogs would not need additional heartworm prevention (the active ingredient is the same) and will not get mange. keep ivomec bottle in a dark, cool place, no fridge needed, it can stay for very long time. if you use regularly, after 2-3 times dogs surroundings and home are free of tick. at the beginning can also spray with bayticol around house, walls, trees etc if infestation is much, also safe on dogs body. if you pluck off ticks do not throw them away, put them in bottle with water, after close bottle and throw in garbage. if your dog had lots of ticks recently or in the past, let vet check about blood parasite and give medication. symptoms of blood parasite are many, it lowers immunity system and affects liver and kidney and other, shows anemia with pale gums, fever and pain, untreated leads to death. the treatment is inexpensive but if your dog already ill from bloodparasite the treatment will be necessary at vet stay and will become expensive, even sometimes there is no cure anymore in later stage. that is why please keep your dogs free of tick. ivomec does not work for flea, frontline will kill flea. flea are dangerous too, they transmit eggs of tapeworm which untreated can also become life threatening to dogs. you could also try tick and flea collars, but be careful the dog(s) would not be able to chew them as they are poisonous. i have no experience with collars. thank you and good health for you and dogs :)
