aff o thi Vale of Leven History page: (Jamestown is pronooncit Jimsin) The Pioneer (A poem about Elliotts bus, The Pioneer, which ran from from Jamestown to the Vale.) There’s a wee broon bus in Jamestown An’ it’s ca’ed the Pioneer It rins doon frae the Connaught Close The fare’s no’ awfu’ dear. A humble penny tak’s ye doon But Erchie does the countin’ And you may see his centre shed When turning at the fountain. The women folk are driven doon Tae buy stuff at the store I’ve seen them getting’ on the bus Wi’ messages galore. The unemployed on rainy days Get drapped near the “Buroo” The workers tae in Levenbank Can mak’ the wee bus fu’. The driver aye rins up tae time As reg’lar as the clock He waves his haun or sounds his horn A happy lad is Jock. (He tried tae grow a wee mustache I saw it, goodness knows) But thank the stars he shaved it off Or drew it up his nose. The school weans ken the Pioneer It taks them hame for dinner An’ wriggle roon upon the sates They ken they’ve backed a winner An’ even the chape butcher’s boy Wi beef an’ sausage tae Comes up tae “Jimson” in the bus Ta sell his stuff each day. On Setterday (a busy day) It rins frae morn till eve An’ Jock drives on wi’ muckle glee Until it’s time tae leave. Then Elliott’s bus will take him A’ dolled up tae the Strand He always takes “her” up the stair He likes to hold her hand. So rin on bonnie wee broon bus Don’t heed this written word And prove tae a’ and sundry That there’s guid inside a Ford I’ve penned this little elegy O, wee broon bus , tae thee Noo, Erchie, jist you do yer stuff An’ let me doon buckshee
