amazing finish to an amazing Hungarian Grand Prix, Daniel - TopicsExpress

amazing finish to an amazing Hungarian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo takes his second career victory for Red Bull! Just like in Canada he made the winning pass with 3 to go, this time on Alonso. Really fun battle at the end, Alonso had the track position, Hamilton the best engine, and Ricciardo the best tires. Hamilton had to be content with a podium, yes that is a podium despite starting from the pit lane and spinning on the opening lap! He actually beat Rosberg, whose strategy just didnt quite work out. Rosberg caught Hamilton and Alonso on the last lap but even though he was 4 seconds a lap faster on new tires he couldnt get by. Both Ferraris had their best result of the season, 2nd for Alonso and 6th for Raikkonen who gained 10 positions himself, so much for Hockenheim being tough to pass on. Solid 5th for Massa and 8th for Bottas whose strategy didnt work out, Vettel managed 7th though he had a violent spin on the front straight and it was a miracle he didnt crash out. 2 safety cars, one on lap 9 when Marcus Ericsson spun on one of the wet corners (it rained shortly before the start so everyone was on intermediate tires for the first 10 laps or so). Ericsson impacted the tire barrier hard but is fine. While still under safety car, Grosjean spun and crashed at the same corner going about 60 mph, not his finest moment. Other safety car was for Perez, who, after taking out his teammate Hulkenberg and ending his streak of points at every race this season, then lost it off the final corner like Vettel did but didnt work the miracle and smashed the wall hard. Adrian Sutil came oh so close to points, he was less than a second off 10th place Jenson Buttons McLaren for the final point, but Sauber heads to the summer break without any points yet, though they have made progress. Plus Mercedes had a team orders moment so they will have plenty of time to solve that. Close to a month off now until Spa, Ill have to content myself with Indycar and the top 3 Nascar divisions, but at least no more getting up early for a little while. Im sure you heard by now Jeff won his 5th Brickyard 400, his 90th career win and a guaranteed Chase spot. Following him was a trail of Gibbs cars 2-3-4, but problems in inspection for Denny Hamlins 3rd place car, the rear firewall block-off plates (which I didnt know existed) were not sealed off properly, allowing the car to generate more rear downforce for stability. Expect points penalties and fines on Tuesday. Good solid runs for Michael McDowell in 26th on the lead lap, Josh Wise 29th, and Landon Cassill in 30th, better than usual for them. The other MAJOR news in Nascar: Carl Edwards will leave Roush Racing at the end of the year. Roush announced his lineup for 2014 and it will be three cars, Biffle, Stenhouse, and Bayne, with Fastenal moving to Stenhouse next season. Edwards cannot announce where he is going until September, but it is a move to a 4th Gibbs car. This may begin the demise of Roush as a competitive team, they have struggled the past few years and the remaining drivers are just not quite top level plus the sponsorship is not as plentiful as it once was. They will still be there but I dont think they will be competing for wins, top 10s may be all they can do. Also of note, on a runway in Charlotte one of the Gibbs planes drove into the empty Stewart-Haas plane, damaging the tail but causing no injuries. Bernhard Langer annihilated the competition at the Senior British Open, setting a new Champions Tour record with a whopping 13 stroke victory! It must be a great feeling walking up to the 18th tee knowing you can take a 15 and still win. Vincenzo Nibali of Italy wins the Tour de France by 7:37, his first win. American Tejay van Garderen finished 5th overall, 11:24 behind, very impressive run. Today was nice, Jeff won, Nascar didnt throw a fake caution at the end to prevent Jeff from winning which was a nice change, good race in Hungary where Raikkonen did NOT get screwed over by his own engineers, and a big driver change coming at Roush. Not bad.
