an excerpt form The Elf of Edinburgh Ernest Slocum could best be described as an unpleasant person. As the owner of West Side Easy Pawn he dealt with all manner of people. The front door of his shop was located on Park St. The rear entrance was a small alleyway that connected to Wilson Way. Mr. Slocum was in a particularly foul mood that afternoon owing to the fact that he had to shut down his shop for an hour and attend to his not so ailing mother. The rain had only made his mood worse. Walking down Wilson Way he paused at the gateway to the alley and then it came. The clang from the wire mesh of the gate made by his guard dog, who, for a lack of any kind of imagination he had named, ‘Dog.’ Dog, hearing someone at the gate did his job and hurtled himself at the wire all snarls. “Down you stupid cur, now back up!” when Dog did as he was told Mr. Slocum swung the gate outward and entered then slammed it closed. Because he was lost in thought and muttering to himself what Slocum didn’t notice was that the latch did not fully catch.
