an excerpt from my wife Kristines book Another excerpt (I am in love with Charlie the most right now;) “So youve come to keep me company for a spell” Charlie held an old pipe in his hand; the smoke silently curled up and around his head before the fan dissipated it. “I really appreciate you having me Charlie.” Kate swallowed the lump of emotion in her throat, she was unused to people being kind, with no ulterior motive; people that genuinely cared about her with no secret desire to get something in return. Cutlers Gap was full of good people and Charlie was one of the best. “You know your always welcome here, girl. It aint five star lodgings but its clean and I cook a good steak.” Charlie stood up, grabbed a bag from Toms hand and motioned them to follow him inside the house. Kate looked around as she stepped through the door, there was a large central room with a hallway on either side of the room. In the middle of the room stood a large, two sided stone fire place. On the side of the fireplace where she stood was a large living room furnished with a large overstuffed leather sofa, with nail-head trim. On either side of the sofa were leather recliners in the same dark leather as the sofa. On the left wall were bookcases overflowing with books. The books were in no particular order; there was a large book on criminal law right next to a paperback mystery novel which was next to a farmers almanac. The coffee table sat on a large tanned cowhide, the walls were decorated with a collection of antique cowboy paraphernalia; rusted spurs, lassos, canteens, cattle skulls with long horns, even a large wooden Texas star. There was a small television in the right corner; it had to be thirty years old if it were a day. Kate took a minute to take it all in. Though the room was cluttered and lived in, it was clean and bright, the sun from the large windows made patterns on the ceiling as it reflected off the glass of the old lanterns Charlie had placed all over the room. Kate smiled, this place felt like real home, the kind of home she had never experienced before. Oh, she had lived in several houses, each one bigger and grander than the last. They were beautiful showpieces, with art hanging on the walls; cold, austere, art bought for its ability to impress the “right” people and for its investment value. There had been large fundraisers and social functions hosted in those houses; they had been pictured on the society pages of the best newspapers, their summer house had even been featured in an architecture magazine. Yet, none of them, not a single one, had ever given her the sense of peace and relaxation that this old ranch house did. They had all left her cold, alone and desperate for escape. “Charlie your house is beautiful.” Kate gave Charlie a genuine smile. “It aint much but its home” even as he shrugged off the compliment Kate could see the pride in Charlies eyes. He truly loved this house he had built and lived in the last sixty years. Bells-Kristine Renee
