an honest confession... while we are for 5 n 1/2 long yrs in med school..we learn many things like consulting the patients,diagnosing the diseases suffered by patient by his appeareance,his movement,his voice,his odour,his heart rate,vomitus and by hundred of other things...we learn surgical skills..we learn to cut into cadavers and to deliver out new life..we saw people dying as we held their hands..we heard diminshing heart beats..we fought with our might to save them and may be got lucky a few times in doing so too...we cured few,treated many,healed many..but i fear that of all those lives,deaths and in between these two ..we went through..we gained clinical and social knowledge but we lost something subconsciously.. or are at least are losing subconsciously.. we are losing our basic human nature to connect with other people..to properly socialize with them.. Doctors have always been and will always will be a need of society..but i ask all my medical fraternity..that after seeing all the colors,emotions,truth and lies,desperation and helplessness,joy and sorrow so closely during practice of medicine...we somewhere build a parallel subconscious utopian world inside us to live in peace with..which is free of all contortions and is nearly ideal..and when we compare this with the non-ideal and random society outside..the mismatch strikes back at us and leaves us helplessly being nothing else than a doctor..who i believe is more human than anyone else and hence cannot connect well with others and remains in his own fraternity.. most of us go with hobbies to keep this disconnection and its disabilty buried in our subconscious.. i beleve that we as a doctor have the best knowledge about SOCIETY AND ITS MACHINERY as a whole but we lack the wisdom to interact and be part of it.. P.S.- Mayank Anand now i totally agree with you that finally after years of practice a doctor ends up beng an excellent doctor minus a simple common man.
