and for all LA residents WHO *** dont usually see opera or for those who enjoy opera and are ready for an unbelievable experience GO! see The Magic Flute Magic Flute at the LA Opera is a triumph of innovation. In place of sets, the audience is confronted with a wooden movie screen two stories high with trap doors serving as rotating carousels for singers strapped in place, sometimes as high as 20 feet above the stage. As the singers are turned towards the audience, incredible moving cartoon imagery is projected around them, taking the place of sets. At other times, singers appear at stage level where they can move around, with the settings projected cleverly around them. The costumes are 1920s vintage to give the feel of silent film, complete with a trio of flappers. The cartoons are masterfully inventive - think of a fusion between Peter Maxs Yellow Submarine and MC Eschers engineering detail. Conlon brought this production from Berlin himself, and its certain to become the hottest ticket in town. 26 sold-out performances in Berlin! The sensation of last season! A genuine opera happening! [B.Z.] Swathes of smoke that merge to form scenes, elephants swimming in cocktail glasses, flying flutes, dancing bells… Nothing is impossible in The Magic Flute performed by the Komische Oper Berlin. The British theatre group 1927 19-27.co.uk and Barrie Kosky have pulled off a deliciously absurd blend of silent film and animation [Berliner Morgenpost]. “You are amazed by the perfection, you laugh in appreciation of the virtuoso design behind each of these scenes... Breath-taking!” [TAZ] BTW in Berlin our friend played the Erster geharnischter Mann (translated: First man in armor) bit.ly/1iNKPmM Together with Tara we attended the performance in Berlin last NY Eve. - we were blown away ! ++++ Do not walk - run to get a ticket before all the performances sell out.+++ A 7th performance was just added, but that wont be enough to saturate this culture craving LA market.
