It was the only way to stop the spell from affecting him.” Simon slowly pulled the knife away. “The spell was working both ways?” he asked. “Yeah,” Fish answered, “He wanted to kill her too.” “And why did she choose to forget him?” Simon asked. Fish looked at me and put his head down. “Because she knew it would kill her to watch him marry Helena,” Fish answered. Simon looked down at me, but I couldn’t look away from Fish. I was in complete shock. Simon noticed the look on my face. “And what is his name?” Simon asked. Fish looked away from me. “James,” he whispered. “What?” I gasped. Fish looked at me. “I’m sorry, Thea. I know you didn’t want to remember him.” “What are you talking about, Fish?” “James, the guy you can’t stand, he’s your real husband.” “That’s not true,” I answered. Simon turned my face with his fingers. “Trust me, James is your husband.” He looked at Fish again. “And if I were to kill James, do you know what would happen to me?” Simon asked. “That’s easy,” Fish answered, “You die.” Simon’s face went pale. “So I really would die then?” “Yup, seconds later.” “And what else do you know about the spell I put on Thea?” Fish looked at me again. “It doesn’t make her want to kill James anymore, but that’s because she can’t remember who he is. I also know it makes her love you. I know it makes her do things for you. And as much as we hate it, I know she would protect you.” “That is good news,” Simon said, stroking my face. “I thought she was pretending.” I turned my face away from his touch. I couldn’t make sense of what I’d heard. What kind of mess had I made of things? How could I put my loved ones in danger like this? “Tell me something,” Simon said facing Fish, “If she would do anything for me, tell me why she’s having you hunt my men?” Fish looked at him confused. “She’s not having us hunt your men.” “And then who is?” Simon asked. “I don’t know, but I know it’s not any of us.” Simon smiled and looked my way, but I looked away in shame. I kept thinking of what Cory was doing; how he was pretending to be my husband. Why would I make him do that? How could I ask any of them to live a lie for me? I looked down at Fish, I felt so much guilt for what I was putting him through. I was never going to forgive myself for this. Simon squatted down in front of me. “So you erased him because of heartbreak. I can live with that,” he said, brushing the hair from my face.
