#andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve’s #conservation team, headed by andBeyond Phinda Conservation Manager, Simon Naylor, remains 100% committed to caring for Phinda’s land and wildlife, each and every day. There are more than 40 independent research projects currently underway on the reserve, studying and collecting important data on everything from earthworms and elephants to spiders and suni. No one day in the life of the conservation team is ever the same. One morning they’ll be fitting an elephant bull with a GPS collar or darting female elephants with contraceptives to manage the population, and the next day they’ll be out darting lions or cheetah to be transferred to other reserves and protected areas in order to diversify gene pools and establish new populations. The andBeyond Phinda team also regularly notches rhino for research purposes, at the same time drawing important DNA samples for the national RhODIS, Rhino DNA Index System. They regularly eradicate invasive alien plant species, such as chromolena, and continually conduct game counts, vegetation and soil surveys, aerial surveys, grass transects and fire control management. Simon recently travelled to Botswana to follow up on the six (actually seven because one happened to be pregnant at the time) rhino that andBeyond successfully translocated from andBeyond Phinda to the Okavango Delta last year. Along with Brent Cook from Chipembere Rhino Foundation, a donor and regular contributor to our Rhinos Without Borders programme, and veterinarian Dr. Reuben, they darted four of the rhino and successfully fitted them with new ankle collars for research and monitoring purposes. andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve is a conservation success story that started more than two decades ago. Thanks to Simon and his incredible team, this beautiful piece of land and all its wildlife will be around for future generations to enjoy. andBeyond
