angie calls me last night panicking over the ebola virus outbreak - TopicsExpress

angie calls me last night panicking over the ebola virus outbreak that just hit the U.S.A so i thought id write down my view on the situation. for once, i think the media is making it 100 xs worse than what it is here in the U.S.A (chance to make lots of $) they need to emphasize it more and educate people about it more in africa where the disease is rapidly spreading due to, pretty much, common sense. things like washing your hands, covering your mouth when you sneeze, not touching dead bodies, using gloves and clean needles at hospital settings is almost nonexistent. the world health organization (WHO) calls it the worst outbreak (ever) and it def. is...in places like western africa. ebola isnt transmitted easily. actually the measles spread at a faster, quicker rate. even in africa, where there is a much larger chance of getting this virus, statistically people are still dying more from AIDS, respiratory infections, childbirth, malaria, or diarrhea. things that are more deadly over there than ebola, are easily controlled here in the U.S.A. so i really think and hope of course, that we will stop this virus here in america. ebola is a hemmorhagic fever, killing about 1/2 of the people that contract it. but it is very difficult to contract. youd have to come in direct contact w an infected persons vomit, sweat, blood, feces, urine or saliva. modern public health systems know how to deal with diseases that travel through bodily fluids, africa (and other poor countries) do not have modern public health systems, hence; why it spread at such a high rate. ebola is terrifying, indeed. almost any viral disease is terrifying. im not an expert, however; i know there are far more other viral infections that are much worse (not sure if this brings any comfort) like the marburg virus with a fatality rate of 90%, the hantavirus, different strains of bird flu, lassa virus, junin virus, crimea-congo fever virus, the machupo virus, the KFD virus, and the dengue. just be aware and educated, panic gets us nowhere.
