anhilaal : ON CHHATISGARH KILLINGS (May 2013 ) The principal cause of the destruction of tribal peoples is the imposition of Nation States, Development and Civilization. The panic that `we should not be left behind´ produces active and passive consent among middle classes for ruling ideology. Mind you, this consensus is absolutely democratic. Nobody questions Development, Civilization and Work. Conduct any intensive opinion survey : people `want ´ development -- but without violence ! Can it be more absurd ? Civilization and Development do not save them, C and D kill all of them. Tribals, peasants, factory workers, urban middle classes and nature. Only pace and form might be different. At one go or in piecemeal. Halal or Jhatka. Idealised halal (normal daily life) or idealised jhatka (civil wars, riots, invasions or ethnic cleansings). Or, their different combinations. You can go on killing millions of daughters (foeticide) and go on doing your normal chores. Reason behind is the same generalised panic i.e. normal daily life. Fear of being left behind. Fear of being trampled upon. Fear of fall in the economic hierarchy. Like all societies, tribal societies are comtemporary societies only their ways of dealing with resources are different than ours. We, anhilaal, would prefer nomadic hunter-gatherers not the misnomer prevalent for peasants and semi-peasants (goups in the process of settling down or have already settled down long ago in India ) i.e. adivasis. They are caught between two streams as in other countries. Between statists ( Indian army) and proto-statists (maoists). Between developmentalists and proto- developmentalists. Without questioing Civilization you can not question organized and impersonal violence i.e. in-the-name-of-violence. To be precise, mass killings and deportations in the name of nation, development, democracy, identity or religion. You might not be interested in Civilization. But Civilization is interested in you. You might not be interested in Development. But Development is interested in you. Development with human face is a myth. Civilization with human face is a myth.
