anthony bourdain on cooking and jiu jitsu “It’s a humbling, humbling experience getting squashed by younger, more fit, more experienced, people. It’s become something of an obsession. I started at 58. It’s the last thing in the world I could ever imagined wanting to do or enjoying. I’ve never hung out at a gym. I never really cared about those things. I think it can best explained… at my age to learn a new skill is deeply satisfying. To recreate that feeling of being the lowest person on the Totem pole in a kitchen back when I was 17—knowing nothing in a very hard world. The incremental tiny satisfactions of being a little less awful at something everyday. It’s like that with jiu jitsu for me. It’s a never ending journey. It appeals to some part of my brain that I haven’t visited before. - Anthony Bourdain tribulation. patience. hope.
