anyone ever give any thought to the mechanics of an accented stroke? i never thought of it until i was teaching a class a few years ago and watching the students do accents. i’d see a lot of them try to put more force in the stroke and hit harder, but it just never worked when they were doing a rhythm. when i started to look at what i was doing, i realized i didn’t try to add more force with my arm to the stroke, i just brought the tipper back further on the stroke, then increased the velocity of the tipper so it would it in time i think there is something about increasing velocity over the same distance increase the mass….or something like that. i hated science as a kid….go figure but, id watch lots of people tense their shoulders, and tense their arms to make that accented stroke. i was wondering why i’d never feel tense on the accented strokes, and making the tipper travel further seemed to be the key for me. example, normal rhythm bouncing between 7-5 on a clock face for the accent, i’d bring the tipper up to 9 or more…. just thinking out loud
