They were definitely looking; someone must have seen the supernova and recorded; but time destroys everything, including significant chunks of history. Amazing how huge it has become in such a short time. As for the colours, well its the data thats beautiful again. The hydrogen and oxygen concentrations tend to clump. This implies a certain orderliness in the chaos of a vast explosion. (Chaos is an even grey, without form).
