as yet another scraggly looking person wrapped in a blanket approaches you, preparing to annoy the shit out of you by asking you for some money, food, a cigarette...and you start to get completely annoyed with them and prepare your sarcastic quick retort or perhaps a complete pretend they arent there ignore because you are in a hurry to get out of the cold or to the restaurant or to work or to your home...check your attitude for a second and look at that person and thank your lucky stars that you are not in a place in life where you have to ask YOU for food. the last thing they need right now in their life is your bullshit. homeless people are homeless...not necessarily stupid. and most of them would rather do anything other than ask you for food or money. you think to yourself, i would die if i had to do that. yeah...thats how it feels for them, too, often. and as nice as it is for you to rationalize that they could get a job and have a life like you instead of annoying you right now, consider for a second that maybe not. im not saying you should feel like an a**hole because you have it so well...but at the very least, unless they are an asshole (and ive been there), do them the solid of at least treating them like a fellow human being. no one is better than you...no one is beneath you. we are all people. lets try and remember that.
