aspire.org.uk/11instructability.aspx InstructAbility Fitness industry training for disabled people InstructAbility is a multi award winning bespoke training programme providing disabled people with free, accessible fitness industry training leading to an internationally recognised CYQ Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification. The current programme also includes a CYQ Level 3 Exercise & Disability module which qualifies instructors to work with disabled clients. The programme has been created by Aspire and YMCAfit, the leading fitness industry training provider. What does the programme involve? Phase 1: An 18 day YMCAfit training course delivered over seven weeks (2-3 days/week, approximately 10.00am - 4.00pm) The course is designed to give participants the skills, knowledge and confidence to begin their fitness career and includes comprehensive learning resources and all the guidance and support needed to pass the course. Successful completion will lead to an internationally recognised qualification, the CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing and a Level 3 disability and exercise qualification. Aspire also leads a training session on engagement strategies and presentation skills. Phase 2: Following the training phase, qualified disabled instructors will undertake a twelve week (3 days/week) voluntary placement in a public or private fitness gym. Volunteer instructors will undertake community outreach to engage other disabled people in fitness and exercise sessions. On completion of the programme instructors are encouraged to continue volunteering or progress into paid employment. What can the programme lead to? Full-time or part-time work as a gym instructor within a health and fitness club. Become a gym supervisor or fitness manager within a health and fitness club. Deliver popular group classes (by taking CPD modules) including Circuit Training, Keiser Cycle or Core Stability. Build towards becoming a level 3 personal trainer by completing the remaining personal trainer modules. Courses will be advertised here once dates and venues are confirmed. The InstructAbility programme is free for eligible candidates Eligibility: ✔ Disabled ✔ Unemployed ✔ 16yrs + (no maximum age) ✔ Gym user experience ✔ Able to attend selection day and all course dates ✔ Able to commit to minimum 12 weeks voluntary work placement including community outreach activities We are looking for people who can use their own experience of overcoming barriers to exercise and improving physical function and/or mental health, to inspire and support other disabled people to participate in fitness activity. We welcome applications from people with a range of impairments but please note that candidates need to be able to work at level 2 standard (equivalent to GCSE) due to the theory components in anatomy and physiology which are an examined part of the course. Past students: Successful past students include individuals with physical and sensory impairments and mental health conditions. The range of injury/conditions include; spinal cord injury, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, limb loss, ehlers danlos, post traumatic stress, depression. and loss of function caused by stroke, brain injury, osteoarthritis and other conditions affecting skeletal and neuromuscular function. Visual impairment, if a candidate has total sight loss they will need to provide a support worker/volunteer to assist them during the industry placement. Hearing impairment - the course is open to individuals with a hearing impairment, however we do not currently have funding for a BSL interpreter for those who require it. InstructAbility graduates come from a vast range of backgrounds including people who face barriers in entering the fitness industry, people who have lost a previous job due to an impairment, individuals who have acquired an injury through sport, those who are involved in disability sport, as well as injured armed service personnel transitioning from the armed forces.
