at a gig today, a guy comes up on the break and starts talking to me about jazz, vibraphone, bobby hutcherson, etc. white guy, mid 30s, we were playing a school fair/fundraiser, he was one of the parents. he mentions he played a little guitar in the past but hes not playing anything right now. mentioned going to hear jazz at a few places, dizzys, gilberts jam, etc. then he hits me with the hard stuff - he says hes always wanted play drums because tony williams changed his life. then he says how he got into the navy to escape podunk texas where he grew up, but he felt that there was always some lingering racist w him. and says that jazz fixed that, changed his mind on things. got to admit that hit me. ive been watching the news and reading too many shitty comments recently, shaking my head w the outpouring of racist BS, thinking i live in the wrong world, and wondering if the tide will ever change. do humans really hate each other that much? yes they do. is it possible to change? ive been thinking no, but this guy proved me wrong. amazing.
