attending the annual theater district open house today reinforced my appreciation for houston and its commitment to the performing arts. the theater district open house introduces the arts to thousands of families free of charge. the end result of such an event engenders respect and admiration of the performing arts, each performing arts organization, and connects us with the greater houston community. i was proud of our town today, watching many young families with small children so well-behaved. when children see thousands of people paying attention to music and dance, and honoring excellence, i believe it creates a place in their hearts and minds for something more, something better. it makes me sad to think of the hundreds of thousands in the houston region that do not take advantage of the rich cultural amenities that we have in our own backyard. houston is a dynamic, diverse, cultured, and downright amazing city; if you arent too sure about that statement, you may want to get out there and discover your town. coming up: a very tamarie christmas at catastrophic theatre; the tontons with ume at fitzgeralds; bonobo at house of blues; texas contemporary art fair at george r. brown convention center; da camera events: morton feldman: for philip guston at the rothko chapel; quatuor mosaïques at the menil; the danish string quartet at the menil (see sample below); shanghai quartet with wu man, pipa at the asia society texas center; (i will be at all of the above should you choose to get out and about) https://youtube/watch?v=9wOS_bTfnFo
