bbc.co.uk/news/health-30857546 I’m a strong believer in positive politics across the political spectrum :) and Nick Clegg’s current focus on mental health issues is a good example of how positive politics could work. He’s saying all of the right things about not stigmatising mental health issues and importing a model of good practise from Detroit. A negative political response would be to solely focus on the fact that he is a hypocrite being part of a ruthless neo-liberal government that has cut back community based mental health projects while creating social economic conditions that have pushed many more people to the edge while also stigmatising and harassing those people with a punitive modern day workhouse benefits regime and this would allow his political detractors to ignore the intrinsic value of his comments on this issue because they come from a sullied unholy source and I have seen my comrades on the left falling into that trap over and over again, we could call it negative knee jerk politics. A more positive approach is to simply thank Nick Clegg for his contribution allowing him to influence our political agendas while calmly pointing out his political inconsistencies and everybody wins through with that approach. * The voting public wins because strong policies are being quickly recognized and implemented. * Democratic politics will be seen as a more mature and effective process. * Nick Clegg will get credit for using his position to promote useful ideas. * His political rivals will be seen as listening politicians who put the greater good before their own political prestige.
