big problem in US is that were one of few countries where individuals have to pro-actively register to vote...most countries passively register folks thru census rolls, etc..if youre not on the rolls on election day, you simply bring national ID and youre added (of course, US libertarianism means we dont have a national ID card...every other country does..)....anyway, only 70% of eligible voters are registered in US...70% of that 70% votes in prez elections (hence 50% of eligible voters decide prez election..with 70% of that 50% coming from top 50% of family incomes!)...but only 45% of that 70% of those who register vote in mid-term elections (with even more than 70% of voters coming from top half of income distribution)..and even fewer vote in odd year municipal and state legislative elections..and the big whole in the electorate (those who dont vote) are working class folks of all races...if 70% of all eligible voters voted wed have a more pro-Democratic electorate..hence Republicans want to make it hard for people of color, students, elderly, working class folks to vote...
